The children absolutely love adding to our Caritas Chain of Love with every Lenten donation that they make, and seeing the number of thorns in our crown reduce concurrently. It is with great excitement that we measure our Chain in all sorts of ways every Friday - great real world maths practise of measurement! Thank you so much to everyone who continues to generously donate to this worthy appeal.

I will be away from Wed 2nd March and be back again on the following Wed 9th March. See if you child can remember why Ms May will be away - we will be using our maths skills to add up distances that I will be covering! The children will be in the very capable hands of Mrs Mazoletti, a previous long term teacher at St Bernardine's.

Have a wonderful week! :)

It is very impressive to note once again the commitment that children in 2 Navy are showing to their homework. An important tip for effective learning of the weekly spelling words is to ensure that your child does the 'look, cover, write, check' over four separate days.  Some children have told me that they do their four sets of spelling all in one go, which unfortunately does not help their long term memory of the spelling of those words, and is evident in their Friday spelling test results. To make this a worthwhile learning experience, practising the spelling words daily is far more productive. Please also continue to practise the sight word spelling, which is updated regularly in your child's reading folder. Your child will generally be tested on a fortnightly basis. Becoming proficient at spelling the most common 200 words will assist your child enormously in both their writing and their reading fluency. Thank you for the time you take to support your child with their practise of literacy and maths concepts at home - it really is an important way to set your child up for success.

Have a wonderful week! :)

It was very impressive to see that 27/28 students brought their homework in on Friday - what fantastic commitment to your learning, 2 Navy! This term we also have the Library Bag Challenge, we score a point for every student who brings in their library bag on Thursdays, so please remember to pack it each week! :)

Last week we began the very important time in the Catholic calendar known as Lent. This is the 40 day lead up to Easter, during which we make a conscious effort to turn back to God and try to make ourselves grow into better people in readiness for the Easter celebration. Our school makes a wonderful effort each year to contribute money to Caritas to help others less fortunate than us. In 2 Navy, we have a crown of thorns on our prayer table which reminds us of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us on Good Friday. Each time a student makes a donation into our Caritas box, he or she removes a thorn (toothpick) from our crown of thorns because the personal sacrifice of giving up of money for others links with the sacrifice that Jesus gave up himself for us. The student also then adds a link to our "Chain of Love" to remember that our giving is done with love and free will. At the end of each week we will measure and tweet how long our Chain of Love is growing!

Have a wonderful week! :)

It's fantastic to see most students are being super good readers and remembering to bring their reading folder in every day. Please bring the reading folder EVERY day even if your child has not finished reading the book - by not signing the book record sheet we will know to send the same book home again. The reading folder is also how we send home notes and messages so that they don't get lost or spilt on inside school bags.

This week you will receive a letter about Study Ladder and your child's password will be taped inside the reading folder for easy reference. Study ladder is an excellent way for your child to practise maths concepts which we are covering in class, in a fun and enjoyable way.

Sight word lists will also appear in your child's reading folder this week. It will have recorded which level and words which your child is currently practising to spell. Please leave these lists inside the reading folder so that we can update them each time your child is tested - that way your child will know which words to continue practising at home.

Spelling: On our blog is a link to Spelling City. I have included all the sight word lists on it as well as the current Sound Waves Spelling Unit from which the homework spelling list is set. This provides another fun way for your child to practise homework spelling words and sight words.

Have a wonderful week!

We have had a short but great first week in 2 Navy!  Not only do the children have the excitement of a new classroom, they are also lucky enough to have a room with a view - being upstairs is a fun change! Everyone has settled in very well, catching up with familiar faces as well as establishing new friendships. On Friday, notes were sent home that outline the term ahead. Please sign up for our blog and twitter, as it will be through these mediums that I will provide weekly updates and insights into our classroom life.

Home readers will be sent home as of Week 2. It is very important that children read every night in order to develop their reading and comprehension skills, which underline their ability to process information across every subject area. Please return the reading folder EVERY DAY regardless of whether or not your child has finished reading the book, as we use the reading folder to send home notes rather than have them getting lost in school bags. Have a great week! :)

Looking back over the year, we have had a fantastic time together as the 2 Navy community.  We have worked hard and learnt lots of new things, have made terrific friends and created many wonderful memories.  Thank you for being such an awesome class of students, this year has been an exciting journey with you all. Parents, thank you also for your support throughout the year, education really is a partnership between home and school and you can be proud of the achievements of your child this year! Please remember to read with your child throughout the holidays and revise sight words and counting so that your child has the best possible start for Year 3.  I wish you all a very safe and blessed Christmas and a wonderful 2016! :)
